31 March - 5 April 2012: I attended the 126th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Kampala, Uganda, as a member of the UK Parliamentary delegation. The theme of the Third Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, was “Access to health as a basic right: the role of parliamentarians in addressing key challenges to securing the health of women and children”, and in my role as the chair of the specific drafting sub-committee I spoke in the debate on 2 April. [The UK's amendment on tobacco control was included in the resolution passed unanimously and by acclamation by the Third Committee, and then accepted by the Plenary on the last day of the Assembly] See IPU ASSEMBLY, KAMPALA 2012 for my contributions to the debate. |
